Putting the Muscle back into Classic Cars

Changing from Manual to Automatic in the FB Holden

November 19, 2024

The FB Holden originally came out with a manual gearbox and shift on the column.  The original Holden gearboxes were not renowned for their strength or their speed off the line.  It was decided that we wanted to put an automatic transmission in the FB, so a Trimatic box with V8 internals and universals complete with a hole shot converter was installed.  This required the floor hump in the centre of the Holden to be changed as the Trimatic is a much bigger box.  An FB Automatic steering column was sourced and reconditioned allowing the gear shift to remain on the “tree”.  This conversion allowed the FB to be much faster on takeoff and provided a more relaxed drive while still maintaining the original look.
